Porto announced this Thursday (21) that it has chosen not to renew the contract with Brazilian defender Thiago Silva, at the Portuguese club since December 2025.
The parties had signed a contract until the end of the current European season, with an option to renew for another year, which ended up not being exercised by the Portuguese association.
During his short spell, the 41-year-old defender participated in the Portuguese Championship title campaign, with Porto once again lifting the national cup after three seasons.
Thiago Silva entered the field 14 times for the team, without scoring goals.
He had already played for the team in the 2004/2005 season, but on that occasion he only entered the field for Porto B, before moving on to Dynamo Moscow, in Russia.
“With Thiago Silva’s departure confirmed, the club wishes him the best for the future. FC Porto will always be his home,” the club said in a statement.
One of the main defenders in Brazilian and world football in recent years, Thiago Silva gained prominence on the national scene at Fluminense, between 2006 and 2008, when he won the Copa do Brasil, in 2007.
He then went on to a successful career abroad, with spells at Milan, PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) and Chelsea, having won the Champions League (2020/21) with the English team, in addition to the Italian Serie A title (2010/11) and the French Championship seven times.
In 2024, he announced his return to Fluminense, with whom he played in the Club World Cup.
He defended the Brazilian team in four editions of the World Cup (2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022), and won the Confederations Cup, in 2013, and the Copa América, in 2019.
He even had his name included in Carlo Ancelotti’s pre-list for the 2026 World Cup, but ended up not being included in the final list.
