Hospital was set on fire in the epicenter of the Bundibugyo variant outbreak; 18 people suspected of being infected fled the scene
Residents of a town in eastern Congo attacked and set fire to a health center where patients with the virus are being treated. It was the second time the place was attacked in a week.
According to one of the hospital directors, no one was injured. But to escape the attacks, 18 patients with suspected Ebola infection fled the health center.
The incident took place on Friday night (May 22, 2026).
On Thursday (May 21), family members set fire to another center, in the city of , after being prevented from recovering the body of a man, suspected of having died from the disease.
The virus is highly contagious even after a person dies. It can be transmitted at funerals and burials.
