Iranian judicial authorities executed this Sunday morning, by hanging, Mojtaba Kian, son of writer Mohammad Gholi, after he was found guilty of espionage, treason and collaboration with the intelligence services of the United States and Israel during the conflict.
The sentence, initially handed down by the Alborz Provincial Court and later ratified by the Supreme Court of Iran after the appeals were rejected, also included the total confiscation of the defendant’s assets. The authorities highlighted that, in accordance with the guidelines issued by the head of the Judiciary for cases of treason, the entire process, from arrest to execution, was completed in less than 50 days
According to what appears in the judicial process and technical investigations, and as reported by the Iranian news agency ‘Mizan’, the accused would have provided strategic information and precise geographic coordinates about national defense industrial installations to hostile networks linked to Washington and Tel Aviv. According to the evidence collected, the accused would have sent at least eight messages with critical locations of factories producing weapons parts.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office indicated that, in one of the intercepted communications addressed to agents of a foreign satellite network, Kian had made explicit mention of the Israeli Prime Minister, urging his contacts to “report the matter to Bibi” (Benjamin Netanyahu’s nickname).
In his confession before the court, the accused admitted to having established communication with this media platform and having received a private and secure channel for the transmission of confidential data.
Expert analyzes confirmed the direct impact of espionage on national security, demonstrating that one of the defense installations whose exact location was revealed by Kian was completely destroyed after being the target of an enemy attack just three days after sending the message.
The court justified the maximum penalty based on Article 1 of the Law on increasing penalties for espionage and cooperation with hostile regimes against national security and interests.
