Minister Jorge Messias returned this Monday (25) to his activities as head of the Attorney General’s Office (AGU). He took 15 days of vacation after his nomination to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) was rejected by the Senate at the end of last month.
The Attorney General of the Union has a management alignment meeting, three hearings and internal orders scheduled for this Monday, all scheduled to take place at the department’s premises.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) told allies that he will send back to the Senate the nomination of the Union’s attorney general for the vacancy left by Luís Roberto Barroso in the Court, but the House’s internal regulations prohibit voting on the nomination of an authority already rejected that same year.
Messias awaits a decision from the president, who intends to insist on the ally to demonstrate strength and send the message that he exercises his prerogatives.
According to allies of the head of the AGU, Messias would only accept a new nomination with great certainty that he would be approved, especially after suffering his first defeat.
It was questioned in the Senate on April 29 and rejected by 42 votes to 34. The president of the House, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), is appointed as the main articulator of the outcome.

Last Monday (18) vice-president Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) praised Messias’s name for the vacancy in the Supreme Court and said that it is necessary to “wait” for Lula’s decision on the matter.
“The appointment of minister of the Federal Supreme Court is the prerogative of the President of the Republic, so we will wait. Jorge Messias has all the conditions, he is an experienced jurist and has public spirit. He applied to be a people’s lawyer, for the AGU, to provide public service, so he has public spirit, preparation and experience. We will wait”, stated the vice-president.
