Durigan stated that the pope “invites us to very important reflections on our time” and questioned “how to make technological advances at the service of people, and not just the concentration of power in a few hands”.

For the minister, the discussion involves the world of work. “Technology and AI can generate more productivity, more wealth and simplify life. But it’s fair to ask: are these gains reaching the concrete lives of those who work?”he wrote.

In the encyclical, Leo 14 states that technology is not “an evil in itself”but it is also not neutral, because “assumes the face of those who conceive it, finance it, regulate it and use it”. The pontiff defends that innovation is subject to criteria of social justice and public control.

Durigan stated that the end of the 6×1 scale is part of this discussion. “If technology increases efficiency and generates more value, this needs to be compatible with more balanced journeys and a better quality of life for people”he declared.

The minister also cited the pope’s warnings about concentration of power and technological dependence. “Our challenge is to make innovation, productivity and growth instruments of shared prosperity, and not the privileges of a few”he wrote.
