USP professors approve joining the strike

The student strike began in April and seeks readjustments in benefits for vulnerable students; teachers voted to participate this Monday (May 25th)

The teachers of the (University of São Paulo) approved, this Monday (May 25, 2026), joining the student strike, starting immediately. The decision was taken during a general assembly held in the Adma Jafet auditorium, at the institution’s Institute of Physics, which was live. The university has been closed since April 2026.

The general assembly of teachers 2 central points: the defense of an adjustment that covers official inflation and salary losses accumulated by the category and also the non-criminalization of striking students.

According to a post made on the official Adusp page, the reasons for joining the strike are:

  • IPCA salary adjustment (4.39%) + 3%;
  • progress in the students’ proposal to increase the value of the PAPFE;
  • reorganization of the academic semester;
  • non-criminalization and non-punishment of students
  • investigation of responsibilities in the PM’s actions during the vacancy of the Rectory.

The meeting also sought to reopen negotiations between the Rectory and students, which continue without reaching an agreement. A vigil at the rectory will be held this Tuesday (May 26, 2026), at 1:30 pm, while a new general assembly has been scheduled for June 1st.

UNDERSTAND

The students’ main demand is the readjustment of the PAPFE (Student Permanence and Training Support Program), aid intended for students in socioeconomic vulnerability. According to students, PAPFE currently grants R$335 to students in student housing and R$885 to those who depend entirely on financial support.

The strike calls for both groups to start receiving R$1,804, an amount equivalent to the minimum wage in São Paulo. Students arrived at the university’s Rectory building, even after the water and electricity were cut off at the site.
