Maybe you’re just thinking about it right now. Perhaps you have already been caught by a tempting advertisement on social networks. Tomatoes grown in a special container suspended from the ceiling. That must be a safe bet! “Don’t be fooled,” says Jana Bucharová in the iReceptář do úho podcast. “This will never work.”
You can listen to the audio version of the podcast here:
At first glance, it looks like a miracle. A bag with a plant hung upside down, a huge tomato grows from it like a real creeper, which does not get mold or pests. And the harvest that must be from such a bag! After all, it’s a clear win in videos and photos! “And also pretty deceptive advertising, because despite all the good will, this simply doesn’t work,” explains Jana Bucharová, an expert at the magazine Receptář on garden topics.
Against nature
According to the expert, the reasons why it simply cannot work are quite simple. “Most plants, including tomatoes, have genetic information built into them,” he explains. “And she says that the roots grow downward, where gravity pulls them. And the tips of the plant in turn pull away from gravity, away from the sun.”
It works, with a big but
At the same time, he adds that this does not mean that the tomatoes will not grow at all. On the other hand, there are definitely varieties that can be grown like this on a small scale, for example very small bush tomatoes. “However, the plant will still twist and want to grow in the right direction for it,” adds Jana Bucharová. Hanging will therefore save you space, but you can’t expect a giant variety or super successful cultivation from it.
