Italy is troubled by an early heat wave with temperatures above 30 degrees and the highest warning for Rome and Florence. The authorities are deploying strict protective measures.
Italy’s health ministry issued the highest level of heat alert for four major cities, including Rome, as temperatures exceeded 30 degrees Celsius in many places. At the same time, the DPA agency pointed out that temperatures in the country rose much earlier than is typical for this season, writes TASR.
In addition to the capital, warnings were issued for Florence, Bologna and Turin on Thursday. However, temperatures are expected to moderate across the country on Friday.
Measures of the Mayor of Rome
In Rome, Mayor Roberto Gualtieri signed an order on Wednesday introducing measures aimed at preventing fires and managing the risks associated with the heat wave. Among them is, for example, the obligation to make large public facilities equipped with cooling systems available to residents on days when the highest (red) heat warning applies.
The regulation also stipulates that construction and agricultural workers must be provided with shaded or air-conditioned areas during lunch breaks and, if necessary, ventilation or cooling systems must also be available.
In Italy, there have been several deaths of construction workers in recent years as a result of working in extreme heat.
