In 2023, the minister was booed by part of the March audience when he mentioned the president’s name. Lula had sent a letter to justify his absence from the event, designed by the apostle Estevam Hernandes, from the Renascer em Cristo church.
Hernandes was sympathetic to the appointment of Messias to the high court, as were most national evangelical leaders.
Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) and STF minister André Mendonça, also an evangelical and another supporter of Messias’ nomination, also confirmed their participation in the March.
Two right-wing presidential candidates, senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) and former governor of Goiás Ronaldo Caiado (PSD), have not yet confirmed their speculated participation.
