Putin says drone that hit Romania could be Ukrainian

Explosion left 2 injured and 70 people had to leave the scene; Ukraine says the attack was Russian and has drawn sanctions from the European Union

The Russian President (independent) denied that the drone that 1 residential building in the city of Galați, eastern Romania, this Friday (May 29, 2026), is Russian. The statement was made during an interview with journalists in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The Geran-2 (Shahed-136) attack drone caused an explosion followed by fire on the 10th floor, leaving 2 injured. Another 70 residents left the place in a hurry.

Authorities such as the secretary general of (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), the President of the European Commission, and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, condemned the attack.

Russia launched 232 drones and 1 ballistic missile against Ukrainian territory, close to the Romanian border. According to Putin, it is not possible to say with certainty that the attack was Russian without an examination of the wreckage and criticized Von der Leyen for linking the attack to the country.

“Who says it’s a Russian drone? ‘Lots of people’. ‘Many people’ means nobody. […] Who gives the names? Ursula von der Leyen. Well, she didn’t go to Romania. She didn’t investigate. She didn’t look at the wreckage of the drone. No one can say where a flying vehicle came from until they perform a forensic analysis.”said the Russian president.

Putin even said that the drone could, in fact, come from an attack :

“Ukrainian drones enter Finnish airspace, Polish airspace, Baltic countries’ airspace. Ukrainian drones do that, and the first reaction was exactly the same as they are having now in Romania: ‘The Russians are attacking us,’ they said. Then they discovered that these drones had nothing to do with Russia. They came from Ukraine.”.

Zelenskyy demands EU punishment

On his X account, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy published a series of articles about the case. “The Russians carried out a deliberate attack on our southern region – the Odessa region, which borders Romania,” these.

Zelenskyy stepped up to help Romania “in any way necessary” and said that he counts on “new European Union sanctions against Russia so that they are really strict and make Russia feel that its attacks represent significant losses for the country itself”.
