The European Parliament and the member states approved the agreement on deportation centers

The EU is getting closer to establishing deportation centers for migrants outside its territory. The negotiators of the European Parliament and the member states reached a preliminary agreement.

Negotiators from the European Parliament (EP) and the member states of the European Union (EU) reached a preliminary agreement on Monday evening, which should pave the way for the establishment of deportation centers for migrants outside the EU. The AFP and DPA agencies informed about it, writes TASR.

“The Council of the European Union and the EP have today reached a preliminary agreement on an EU regulation that will enable faster and more efficient procedures throughout the EU for the return of persons illegally residing in member states,” said Nicholas Ioannides, Deputy Minister for Migration of Cyprus, whose country currently holds the EU Council Presidency. “Today’s landmark agreement strengthens the credibility of the EU’s migration policy,” he emphasized.

Deportation centers outside the EU

Under the agreement, asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected and who cannot be returned to their countries of origin could be relocated to “return centres” outside the EU. This measure would be applied in cases where the migrant’s country of origin refuses to take them back or when the EU member state does not maintain diplomatic relations with the country in question. The agreement has yet to be formally approved by the plenary of the European Parliament and EU member states.
