The summer season has already started in and brings with it a set of measures designed to reinforce safety, assistance and accessibility on the municipality’s beaches during the peak months. The device prepared for this summer includes reinforced surveillance, health support and equipment intended for people with reduced mobility.

According to a statement sent by the city hall to newsrooms, the summer season began last Monday, June 1st, and runs until September 30th, during which time the various bathing areas in the municipality will have human and technical resources to support residents and visitors.

Reinforcement of surveillance on the most popular beaches

Among the measures implemented, the installation of 15 surveillance towers stands out, distributed between two of the most frequented beaches in the municipality. The objective is to reinforce observation of bathing areas and improve response capacity in emergency situations.

According to the same source, eight of these structures are located in Praia de Alvor and the remaining seven in Praia da Rocha. The towers will remain in operation until the beginning of October, slightly exceeding the official period of the bathing season.

Half a hundred lifeguards on the ground

The operation prepared for this summer also includes the presence of around 50 lifeguards distributed across the municipality’s various beaches. These professionals ensure surveillance of the concession areas and provide support in situations of need.

In addition to human resources, the beaches have various emergency equipment. The installed devices include automatic external defibrillators and oxygen bottles, reinforcing the ability to provide immediate assistance in the event of an incident.

Nursing stations open again

Assistance to bathers will also be complemented through nursing stations installed on different beaches in the municipality. The measure is the result of a collaboration established between the municipality and the Algarve Local Health Unit.

According to the same source, the three stations will be located in Praia da Rocha, Praia do Vau and Praia de Alvor. Operation is scheduled between July 1st and September 15th, daily between 10:00 and 18:00.

Accessibility remains a priority

The measures aimed at people with reduced mobility remain in place for another bathing season. The Accessible Beach project will continue to provide equipment that facilitates access to the sand and sea.

Between July and September, amphibious chairs, known as tiraló, will be available, as well as tents and support awnings at Praia do Vau and Praia de Alvor. The use of this equipment will be monitored by monitors.

Equipment available in several bathing areas

In addition to the beaches covered by the Accessible Beach project, there are other equipment designed to improve the conditions for using bathing spaces by people with mobility limitations.

The same note explains that the Praia da Rocha Sports Area will provide two amphibious chairs and an adapted beach mat, allowing more comfortable movement between the different points of that bathing area.

The set of measures now implemented seeks to respond to the increase in demand that usually occurs during the summer months, when thousands of people choose the beaches of Portimão for leisure and vacations.

Between surveillance, medical assistance and accessibility, the municipality is once again investing in a comprehensive device to support beach users throughout this year’s summer season.
