The senator (-RJ), pre-candidate for the Presidency, sent this Tuesday (2) a letter to the president’s government to ask them not to impose 25% tariffs on Brazilian products, as recommended by a commercial investigation of the American country.
The announcement of the proposal for a new tariff against Brazil took place about a week after a meeting between Flávio and Trump, which was used by the president’s allies (PT) to (PL) as a measure and promote the narrative that he works against national interests.
In the letter, addressed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Flávio states that Brazil “is going through a period of serious fiscal and economic deterioration” and that the imposition of new tariffs “would cause serious harm to the Brazilian people.”
“I am therefore writing to formally reiterate the request I made to you personally: that the United States not impose tariffs on Brazil,” he says.
The PL candidate also states that, if elected president, he will make his team available to Rubio to try to sign a trade and investment treaty with the Americans “beneficial for both nations — an agreement built on the free market, mutual respect and strategic alliance”.
The document sent to Rubio begins with a thank you for the US decision to classify the Brazilian criminal factions CV (Comando Vermelho) and PCC (Primeiro Comando da Capital).
The measure was announced days after Flávio’s visit and was seen as an electoral asset by the Bolsonarist camp. Government officials criticize the designation because they understand that it opens up a gap for foreign intervention in the country and that it could affect the Brazilian economy.
Flávio Bolsonaro also published a video on social media in which he tries to hold Lula responsible for the new tariff. According to the senator, he told Trump that national companies are already “absurdly taxed” by the Brazilian government and “are suffocated by so much tax and bureaucracy.”
“This study, called Session 301, encompassed more than 60 countries, including Brazil. An investigation that began in 2025, long before my visit to the United States last week. The reality is that this tariff is from Lula, due to his aggressive tone towards the United States, due to his anti-American speech for defending that the dollar should no longer be the standard currency in international relations”, he said.
