A little over six months ago, María Corina Machado’s arrival in Oslo was anything but certain. On December 10, her daughter accepted the Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian committee awarded her the award for her efforts to promote freedom and democracy in Venezuela. It wasn’t until a day later, on December 11th, that the 58-year-old opposition leader made it to the Norwegian capital. A few days earlier she had fled Venezuela by boat in a night and fog operation. In Oslo, she showed her gratitude at the end on a hotel balcony.
