Victims of shark attacks are admitted to the ICU in Pernambuco

Two people were victims of shark attacks in Greater Recifein Pernambuco, between Sunday (31st) and this Monday (1st). After undergoing surgery, a 19-year-old girl and an 11-year-old child remain hospitalized in the ICU (Intensive Care Unit), according to the latest update released by Hospital da Restauração.

The 19-year-old woman was attacked by a shark on Boa Viagem beach, in the south of Recife. According to the Fire Department, the woman was rescued by agents from GBMar (Maritime Fire Brigade). After being removed from the water, she received pre-hospital care on the beachfront.

The young woman was transferred to Hospital Alfa, where she received her first care. Soon after, it was taken by SAMU to Hospital da Restauração, which is a reference for care in this type of case.

She was admitted shortly after 4pm with a complete amputation of her right lower limb, according to the hospital. The patient underwent an emergency surgical procedure to control the bleeding and regularize the thigh wound. Currently, her condition is serious.

The 11-year-old boy, who was admitted on Sunday (31), remains hospitalized in the Pediatric ICU with a serious but stable health condition. He was bitten by the animal Piedade Beachin Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in Greater Recife.

The child also had his left leg amputated. According to the hospital, shortly after being admitted to the unit, the patient underwent an emergency surgical procedure to amputate his left lower limb and treat a fracture in his left hand.

Due to the severity of the injury, the 11-year-old child also needed a blood transfusion.

Risk of accidents with sharks in the area

The Pernambuco Social Defense Secretariat stated that aTwo victims of recent shark attacks on the coast of Pernambuco were in areas considered at risk.

According to a note released by the department, the accidents occurred in sections included in State Decree No. 21,402/1999, which warns of risk of attacks by sharks and other marine animals.

In a note, the CBMPE (Pernambuco Fire Department) reported that there is signage for the risk of incidents with animals in the area and advised the population to respect the recommendations of lifeguards and the warning signs visible along the coastal strip.

According to the Government of Pernambuco, permanent actions to prevent shark incidentsincluding monitoring, signage and environmental education, and in January 2025, 150 new signs were installed along areas subject to incidents on the coast of Pernambuco.

According to Cemit, this was the 84th shark incident recorded since 1992 in Pernambuco. Of the total, 70 occurred in Greater Recife and 14 in Fernando de Noronha.
