Between Sunday (31st) and Monday (1st), there weretwo shark attacks on beaches in the Recife Metropolitan Region. The first case happened on Sunday, at Praia de Piedade, where an 11-year-old child was the victim. The most recent occurred with a 19-year-old girl, in Praia de Boa Viagem.

According to the hospital, shortly after being admitted to the unit, the child underwent an emergency surgical procedure to amputate the left lower limb and treat a fracture in the left hand. Due to the severity of the injury, the patient also needed a blood transfusion.

According to a note released by the department, the accidents occurred in sections included in State Decree No. 21,402/1999, which warns of the risk of attacks by sharks and other marine animals.
It establishes the “banning, for surfing, body boarding and similar nautical activities, in areas along the State’s seafront”.
In accordance with Article 1, an area of prohibition is established for the practice of surfing, body boarding, diving water sports, swimming, nautical and similar water activities, on the coastal strip of the seafront of the Municipalities of Olinda to Cabo de Santo Agostinho, between the latitudes of 8º00.700’S (Bairro Novo) and 8º16.912’S (Itapoama), except in places protected by equipment that prevents the presence of sharks.
History and monitoring
The State Shark Incident Monitoring Committee reported that the attack recorded on Boa Viagem Beach was caused by a tiger shark (Galeocerdo cuvier) approximately three meters long. The identification was made based on the analysis of the victim’s injuries.
According to the committee, the species is common on the coast of the Metropolitan Region of Recife, as well as , identified as responsible for the attack that occurred on Sunday (31), in Praia de Piedade.
The two incidents happened about 10 kilometers apart.
According to Cemit, this was the 84th shark incident recorded since 1992 in Pernambuco. Of the total, 70 occurred in Greater Recife and 14 in Fernando de Noronha.
According to the state government, around R$5.5 million has been invested since 2023 in prevention actions, including scientific research, environmental education, monitoring and signaling of risk areas.
