Lula’s chancellor may meet with Trump’s trade representative today

This Wednesday (3), Mauro Vieira, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, will participate in an event of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in Paris, where Ambassador Jamieson Greer, United States Trade Representative (USTR) will also be present.

Greer leads the body responsible for recommending the new 25% tariffs on Brazilian products. The Brazilian government organizes a meeting between the two so that Vieira can present arguments against the new tariff proposal.

Asked on Tuesday about the government’s steps to reverse the measure, vice-president Geraldo Alckmin mentioned the opportunity at the OECD event.

Lula's chancellor may meet with Trump's trade representative today

— President Lula will talk about this, the dialogue is permanent. There is nothing marked, but it is permanent. There is dialogue between the USTR and the Ministry of Development, Industry and Commerce (Mdic), our chancellor (Mauro Vieira) will be in Paris, where Ambassador Greer will also be — said Alckmin.

Section 301

This Tuesday (2nd), Greer commented on the results of the section 301 investigations into Brazil, stating that the 25% tariffs proposed for Brazil are “quite differentiated” due to the exclusions of beef, coffee, metals, energy and other products. According to him, the investigations highlighted “unfair practices” in Brazilian trade.

Greer has been one of the Trump administration’s main representatives in negotiating bilateral agreements amid the tariffs. According to data from Mdic, the new 25% tariffs should affect around 21% of Brazilian exports to the United States.

In a statement, the government stated that the USTR investigation originated from a political articulation linked to the Bolsonaro family and accuses allies of former president Jair Bolsonaro of acting against the country’s interests.

“It is regrettable that all the work of dialogue and coordination that the Brazilian government has done, including the personal involvement of presidents Lula and Trump, is sabotaged by purely electoral and family interests”, says the text.

The government also criticized the inclusion of Pix among the targets of the American investigation. The instant payments system operated by the Central Bank was cited by the USTR as an example of a practice that would harm private competitors in the United States.
