The NYPD is conducting an investigation following the emergence in recent weeks of multiple videos showing groups of people entering and exiting the sewer system of the city. The hypothesis being considered is that the men, captured by surveillance cameras in various neighborhoods of Brooklyn y Queensare searching for valuables underground, according to US media reports citing police sources. It is still unclear if the same group is behind all the incidents.
In one of the videos you can see several men removing a manhole cover and then descend into the drainage system, from which they emerge again hours later. “Entering the sewer system is illegal and, furthermore, extremely dangerous” a spokesperson for the city’s Department of Environmental Protection told the BBC. “Sewers can present numerous hazards, including harmful and life-threatening gasesunstable surfaces, flood risks and confined spaces. For these reasons, citizens should never enter pipes, drains, drains, sewers or discharge points,” added this spokesperson.
Last week, police received information about several unidentified individuals who removed manhole covers and accessed the sewer system. “The individuals subsequently fled the scene in an unknown vehicle, in an unknown direction,” declared a spokesperson for the New York Police Department, who reported that no injuries have been reported, nor are there any arrests, so the investigation remains ongoing.
Authorities believe the men who were caught on video emerging from a manhole are “treasure hunters” and urban explorers searching for valuables in the sewer system, law enforcement sources told CBS News. The men could face burglary charges if they are arrested.
