Equipment failure impacted Guarulhos and Congonhas airports; Anac states that the error was specific and there was no risk to flight safety
used by Decea (Airspace Control Department) affected flight communications and caused delays and cancellations at Guarulhos and Congonhas airports, in São Paulo, this Tuesday morning (June 2, 2026). Operations have already been reestablished, according to Anac (National Civil Aviation Agency).
According to the agency, the failure caused delays in 135 flights and the cancellation of 15 operations, affecting around 150 flights. The problem originated from a satellite contracted by the Air Force Command and used by Decea for flight communications. The failure affected some frequencies operated by the agency and had an impact considered to be punctual, without a systemic nature.
The FAB (Brazilian Air Force) confirmed that there was a temporary interruption of air operations at airfields in the São Paulo region. According to the corporation, the provisional suspension was motivated by a “external operational technical problem“.
The concessionaire GRU Airport, administrator of Guarulhos airport, attributed the stoppage to the interruption in São Paulo Approach Control. Aena, Congonhas’ manager, reported that the incident was related to the air traffic control system responsible for organizing the flow of aircraft in the region.
In addition to São Paulo airports, the failure had repercussions in other locations served by the São Paulo Terminal, including Campinas, Ribeirão Preto and the Federal District.
In a statement, Anac reported that there was no complete interruption of operations nor any risk to flight safety. According to the agency’s president, Tiago Faierstein, Decea immediately activated contingency protocols and transferred the affected frequencies to channels that continued to operate.
“There was a radio problem, which was quickly resolved by Decea, which has a contingency plan for these cases. At no time was there a risk to the safety of air operations”he declared.
The agency reported that it continues to evaluate the operational impacts of the occurrence, including delays, cancellations, affected passengers and possible rerouting of flights. According to Anac, the system has now been fully reestablished and the airline network is undergoing a normalization process.
Here is the note from Anac sent to Poder360:
“The National Civil Aviation Agency is closely monitoring the incident at the São Paulo terminal this Tuesday, June 2. Through constant contact with the Airspace Control Department (Decea), the Agency was informed that the origin of the failure in flight communications occurred in one of the satellites used by Decea. This satellite is equipment contracted by the Aeronautics Command (Comaer), which experienced a momentary outage on some frequencies operated by Decea. There was only a brief impact from the air operations, which have now been fully reestablished.
“Anac analyzes the operational impacts caused by the occurrence. This includes delays, cancellations, affected passengers and redirection of flights to other terminals. As soon as the survey is completed, the Agency will present the data and evaluate measures for the gradual normalization of the airline network.
“It is worth noting that there was no complete interruption of operations. “There was a radio problem, which was quickly resolved by Decea, which has a contingency plan for these cases. In the case of takeoffs in São Paulo, Decea automatically transferred the failed frequencies to control tower frequencies that were working. Therefore, it is important to make it clear that at no time was there a risk to the safety of air operations”, declared the president of Anac Tiago Faierstein.
“Anac reiterates that it will continue to monitor the situation and work towards the complete reestablishment of operations.”
