The incident led to the cancellation of a scheduled flight to Los Angeles and caused significant damage to one of the airline’s newer long-haul aircraft.
Lufthansa confirmed the incident but did not provide further details.
A spokesman for Fraport, which operates Germany’s largest hub, said the incident occurred on the platform at around 12:45 pm (local time, 11:45 am in Lisbon).
Bloomberg News reported that there were no passengers on board at the time.
The 787 model, a twin-engine wide-body plane used by Lufthansa primarily on long-haul routes, is a relatively recent addition to the airline’s fleet, according to Reuters.
