OpenAI prepares complete renewal before IPO, says newspaper

OpenAI is preparing a broad overhaul of its platform ahead of this year’s IPO, with the aim of better competing with rivals like Anthropic, according to a report from Financial Times.

The San Francisco-based company plans to transform ChatGPT, now a conventional question-and-answer chatbot, into a comprehensive “superapp,” with changes expected in the coming weeks, the newspaper reported based on unidentified current and former employees.

The strategy is based on the conviction that the future of artificial intelligence belongs to autonomous agents capable of performing complex, multi-step tasks, such as booking travel or managing schedules, rather than simply answering questions.
The reorganization will involve a redesign of the company’s website and mobile application, with the addition of new programming tools, image generation and applications developed by partners such as Canva and Booking.com, according to the FT.

OpenAI’s code writing product, Codex, has seen its active user base grow sixfold since launch, surpassing 5 million weekly users. The company’s 2 million corporate customers account for around 40% of revenue, a proportion that could reach 50% by the end of the year, according to the FT.

OpenAI has set aside some consumer-facing initiatives, such as a video generation product launched less than a year ago, to focus efforts on reorganization, according to the newspaper.

The Information had reported on June 3 that OpenAI plans to unify Codex and ChatGPT into a superapp in the coming weeks.
