The general director of the National Electric System Operator (ONS), Marcio Rea, stated this Monday, 8th, that it would be necessary to hold a capacity reserve auction per year in order to meet the growing demand for clean energy generation in Brazil and increase the confidence and operability of the National Interconnected System (SIN).
“If you ask me, from zero to ten, what is the need to hold reserve auctions, I would answer that it is ten. In fact, it would need to be held every year”, he stated, during an event in Brasília.
The general director explained that the problem of energy insecurity in the system worsens in the late afternoon, when solar generation drops abruptly and demand increases, creating a situation that, according to him, “is increasingly difficult to manage”.

Rea said that the reserve auction held in 2026 brought “relief” to the sector, but that it was not enough to meet the growing solar and wind generation in Brazil. “It’s not ideal yet. We need more. We still have to take a giant step to try to improve this issue of power and the reliability of the system.”
Test operation over the weekend
The ONS activated, on Saturday, for the first time, an emergency plan to cut energy generation in Brazil. According to the Operator’s monitoring, the country would be at risk of a SIN failure if excess generation was sent to the system without the necessary demand for disposal.
According to the director, the measure was a test for future ONS needs and action strategies if there is no increase in Brazil’s capacity to regulate generation and consumption peaks at different times in the country.

“This was the first time we carried out this operation. And, thank God, we managed to keep the system stable. This is a constant concern that we will look at at all times”, he said.
