Million dollar reconstruction of the presidential residence in Bratislava: You will be surprised HOW the prisoners help!

The Office of the President (KP) of the Slovak Republic has successfully completed the reconstruction of the Karáčoni Palace on Štefániková Street in Bratislava. in which, as a co-administrator of this national cultural monument, she participated with the Office of the Government (ÚV) of the Slovak Republic. TASR was informed about this by the KP communication department.

  • The Karáčoni Palace on Štefániková Street in Bratislava underwent a successful renovation.
  • The restoration of the palace was financed mainly from the Restoration and Resilience Plan.
  • The office of the president invested 3.4 million euros, most of it from European sources.
  • The reconstruction dealt with remediation of humidity, new heating, insulation and energy-saving lighting.
  • Convicts are making the new furniture for the palace, they plan to complete the security work in the fall.

The KP SR and the Central Committee of the SR have agreed on a joint procedure for the reconstruction of the building and financing. The restoration of the national cultural monument was financed mainly from the funds of the Plan for Restoration and Resilience of the Slovak Republic. Projects financed from the Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Slovak Republic must strictly comply with the rules established by the European Commission and primarily include the achievement of demonstrable savings in energy consumption.

“The Office of the President of the Slovak Republic invested 3.4 million euros in the restoration of the part of the building managed by it, of which 2.3 million were financed from the Plan for the Restoration and Resilience of the Slovak Republic,” approached from the department of communication.

Karačoni Palace is the official headquarters of the KP SR. The main administrative facilities of the office are located in the building, including the office for the public, and the staff providing support functions for the performance of the head of state work in it.

The partial reconstruction of the Karáčoni Palace in 1998 did not ensure long-term protection of the building structures against moisture. It was humidity that was the main factor in the degradation of this national cultural monument, which was manifested by the efflorescence of salts, the destruction of plaster, the development of mold and increased heat losses. This was also due to the unsatisfactory technical and construction condition of the building before the start of the reconstruction in April 2025.

From the department of communication, they added that the subject of the restoration of the Karačoni Palace in the administration of the KP SR was therefore the remediation of the dampness of the lower structures and restoration of damaged structures and damp walls, repair of rainwater drainage in part of the modern annex of the palace and drainage of rainwater from the roof of the annex and its safe drainage into the underground absorption facilities on the grounds of Grasalkovičová garden. In addition, according to them, the insulation of the floor of the attic space of the historic building was introduced in order to reduce heat leaks, a new heating system with a hybrid solution of heat pumps and gas boilers to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and new energy-saving lighting, which together will significantly reduce the energy demand and operating costs of the building.

At the same time, according to them, the flat roof over part of the extension was reconstructed as part of the renovation, preserving the original function of the green (vegetation) roof. new wiring and reliable data distributions were implemented in the historical building of the Karáčoni Palace, which are the basis for safe and trouble-free operation. At the same time, a new floor made of carpet squares was implemented in the offices.

As they added, Within the project, KP SR emphasized long-term effective energy management, sustainability and environmental protection including reducing the carbon footprint and overall building operating costs.

They also announced that new furniture will be delivered to the Karačoni Palace by the end of August, provided by the Corps of Prison and Judicial Guards for the KP SR. Part of the interior equipment is thus produced by convicts as part of occupational therapy, while woodworking takes place directly in correctional facilities.

“After the successful reconstruction of the Karáčoni Palace, the Office of the President of the Slovak Republic is continuing work on the project to modernize the security measures in the back courtyard of the Grasalković Palace, with a planned completion by the fall of this year,” graduated from the Department of Communication.
