Fine hair, thick hair, curly and textured hair? Every head, every cut. Explanations from an expert.
There are those who never think about it, there are those who think about it every day: How often should you cut your hair? It depends on the hair, of course. And it depends on each person’s objective.
Laura Polko, celebrity hairdresser, begins by saying in the magazine that a haircut is the best way to get rid of split ends; and it’s also best to cut when you start to notice breakage.
If you notice that your hair is drier or starting to lose its shape, it is also recommended to trim the ends to revitalize it.
Regarding frequency, we start with length and the tips left by various experts.
Short hair: at least every 6 weeks. It may seem contradictory, but shorter hair requires more care and more maintenance.
Medium hair: Trim the ends every 6 to 12 weeks. Although in this case it depends on several factors such as the texture of the hair and its natural growth rate.
Long hair: every 10 to 12 weeks if you are healthy and strong. But this frequency depends on your health. If you are prone to split ends or hair loss, it is ideal to shorten the interval to every 8 to 10 weeks.
Now, the texture, the type of hair.
Fine hair: normally every 4/6 weeks. Medium length, every 6/8 weeks. Long, fine hair, every 8/12 and weeks. As a general rule, fine hair needs frequent cuts to stay healthy and in good condition. It grows slower, but is more easily damaged. It shows signs of weakening more frequently. The ideal is to cut it when it starts to look thin.
Thick hair: 8 to 12 weeks between each cut is a reasonable interval. If your hair isn’t too damaged, you can make fewer salon visits. There is much more hair, it supports more heat than fine hair. It’s a good idea to pay attention to split ends.
Curly and Textured Hair: every 6 or 8 weeks. This is to maintain curl definition and prevent damage. Length isn’t that important: textured hair tends to be drier, regardless of length. Cutting the ends regularly is a good idea.
Damaged hair: soon. All experts agree: when hair is damaged, it needs to be cut. And, in case of very obvious damage, it is necessary to “cut it seriously”, and not just trim the ends”.
