Car rigged with bomb kills senior Russian military officer near Moscow

The explosion killed Colonel Damir Davydov, who headed the Russian Armed Forces’ artillery and missile ammunition supply directorate.

A senior Russian military officer was killed in a car bombing near Moscow in what appears to be the latest in a series of attacks targeting figures linked to Russia’s war effort in Ukraine.

According to Russian media reports, the colonel Damir Davydov57, died after an explosive device planted under his BMW detonated in the early hours of Tuesday in the city of Balashikha, east of the Russian capital. The explosion occurred around 5:30 am, while Davydov was driving near his home, writes .

Davydov headed the ammunition supply department artillery and missile department of the Russian Armed Forces, a key logistical position responsible for overseeing the distribution of ammunition and weapons to the armed forces. His role placed him at the center of Russia’s military supply chain during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Security camera footage released by pro-Kremlin media outlets appears show the vehicle bursting into flames before colliding with a parked car. Witnesses rushed to the scene and tried to rescue the driver from the wreckage. According to reports, Davydov was still alive when he was removed from the vehicle, but he later succumbed to his injuries and died.

A witness who provided assistance at the scene reported to the independent vehicle Astra that the colonel suffered serious burns. “All his clothes were on fire,” said the witness, adding that it was immediately evident that his chances of survival were slim.

Neither Russian nor Ukrainian authorities have officially commented on the incident. However, the attack has already provoked strong reactions in Moscow. Without directly accusing Kiev, retired general and Russian parliamentarian Vladimir Shamanov condemned the attack, describing it as an “outrage” and demanding an answer.

The assassination will likely increase pressure on the Russian security services, which have faced increasing scrutiny over their ability to protect high-level political and military figures. The attack occurred despite enhanced security measures implemented after a series of high-impact attacks since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The incident also has a symbolic meaning, as it happened less than a kilometer from the place where Yaroslav Moskalik, deputy head of the Operations Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces, was killed in a similar attack with a booby-trapped car just over a year ago.

Since the beginning of the war, the Ukrainian information agencies have been linked to several operations against Russian military officers and Moscow-backed authorities in occupied territories. While little is known publicly about the clandestine networks believed to operate inside Russia, analysts say such attacks demonstrate Kiev’s ability to strike far beyond the front lines.
