Unusual: Peruvian police use World Cup mascots in operation against drug trafficking

Peruvian police have become known in recent years for their targeted operations, using flashy costumes, from superheroes to animals.

This time the agents dressed up as 2026 World Cup mascots to approach a suspected drug trafficker, taking advantage of the fact that the man is a “fanatic football fan who lives and breathes World Cup fever.”

“That’s why the police dressed up as mascots, so as not to arouse suspicion when they approached their house”, explained Colonel Carlos Fredy Alcántara Obregón.

The football tournament mascots are Maple the moose; Zayu, the jaguar; and Clutch, the eagle, and represent the host countries: Canada, Mexico and the United States.
