Brito, Brazil’s 1970 World Cup champion, has died at the age of 86. The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) announced this in a statement on Thursday evening.
He did not disclose the cause of death. “Brito left us as one of the greatest defenders in the history of Brazilian football. His contribution during the 1970 World Cup to our third title will remain forever in our memories. May his fighting spirit be an inspiration for our players who will play at the 2026 World Cup,” DPA quoted CBF president Samir Xaud as saying.
Brito and Piazza formed the duo that led Brazil’s defense during the 1970 tournament. While Piazza was known for his technique, Brito excelled in strength and physical conditioning. Brito played 61 matches for the national team.
