The US State Department reported last Thursday, 11, that it had approved a possible sale of FIM-92K Stinger missiles and related equipment to the Brazilian government. The total cost of the transaction, according to the agency, is estimated at US$330 million.
“The government of Brazil has requested the purchase of 100 Stinger Block I FIM-92K missiles and items of non-major defense equipment will also be included. The sale will allow Brazil to assume greater responsibility for its own territorial security and counter-narcoterrorism operations within its borders and regional sphere”, states the American government, in a note.
Also according to the American State Department, defense inputs should improve Brazil’s ability to face current and future threats and, thus, improving its air defense capacity.
“This acquisition supports Brazil’s defense modernization efforts, aiming to do more for its own defense by protecting South American airspace from illicit trafficking operations. Brazil will have no difficulty absorbing these items and services into its armed forces”, continues the area, further reinforcing that, at this time, the US government does not recognize any related proposed compensation agreement.
