Carla Zambelli: journalist has prison sentence revoked – 06/16/2026 – Politics

The (Court of Justice of ) revoked, this Monday (15), the arrest order of , target of armed persecution by the (PL) on the eve of the second round of the 2022 election, in São Paulo. The episode occurred amid restrictions from the Superior Electoral Court, which prohibited voting before the election.

According to the process, the Court declared the sentence extinct and ordered the criminal action to be closed after full compliance with the imposed obligations, with the payment of R$ 2,216.30 in fines and monetary benefits.

Zambelli filed a criminal complaint for defamation and insult against the journalist in July 2023 due to an opinion text by Araújo published on the DCM website (Diário do Centro do Mundo).

At the beginning of June this year, the Court converted the penalty restricting rights into a penalty after non-payment of the amounts. The journalist justified that he did not have the financial means to make the payment and asked that the amount be paid in installments.

After a campaign, organized by family, friends and supporters, he settled the outstanding debts.

Lawyer Renan Bohus, responsible for Araújo’s defense, stated that “society’s support was fundamental in reversing a previous decision that had determined the conversion of the sentence into prison, demonstrating the disproportionality of the measure in light of Luan’s proven financial insufficiency.”

Zambelli was convicted of the armed persecution of the journalist in 2025, by the (Supreme Federal Court). The court determined a sentence of 5 years and 3 months in prison for illegal possession of a firearm and illegal restraint.

The Italian court will analyze the extradition request made by the Brazilian government in this case.

Last Thursday (11), the court, in the process in which the STF sentenced her to ten years in prison for the invasion of the (National Council of Justice) system and for issuing a false arrest warrant against the minister.

The Italian judges stated that the court was not impartial and said that the “dual role” played by Moraes in the case was problematic, as the magistrate acted as rapporteur and judge, being, at the same time, the person injured by the crime.

The president of the STF, minister, reacted on Friday (12) to the demonstration by European Justice and defended Moraes’ actions. In an official note, Fachin declared that the action against the former deputy took place “in accordance with due legal process, contradictory proceedings, broad defense and international commitments assumed by the Brazilian State.”
