As the president of the USA, , prepares to arrive in the French Alps to meet with other world leaders at the (G7) summit, he does not stop celebrating the agreement with , wanting to send his own messages to the participants, but also in all directions.
It is indicative that in anticipation of his arrival in France, Trump posted on Truth Social that: “Ships are starting to move, many of them loaded with oil, coming out of the Straits of Hormuz. They move along the southern sea “boulevard”, which is absolutely safe, protected and in excellent condition. There are other travel routes available too! – President Donald J. Trump”.
The agreement with Iran and its instrumentalization by Trump
With the deal in place, the Republican president arrives in Evian-les-Bains, where he will meet leaders he has clashed with in the past, including Canada’s Mark Carney, France’s Emmanuel Macron, Great Britain’s Keir Starmer, Germany’s Friedrich Merz, as well as the leadership of the European Union. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will also be present.
The de facto agreement gives Trump a strong card against the rest of the G7 leaders, as all had refused to help the US in the confrontation with Iran, while some more and some less criticized Trump’s decision to start this war.
Macron – Starmer front
However, from the statements of the president of France and host of the Summit, Emmanuel Macron, it appears that there are still important issues regarding the situation with Iran that the leaders will want to discuss and are more related to the uncertainty that prevails in the Middle East due to the war and some of the terms of the agreement as they have become known.
Among other things, Macron said that France – along with Britain – is ready to move “very quickly” and deploy assets, including minelayers, in the region.
He added that a French aircraft carrier and accompanying strike force are already in the area and could help within days of the US-Iran deal being signed. Macron also invited the leaders of Egypt, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to a special session on the Middle East on Tuesday, where Iran is expected to be a central issue.
The leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Canada issued a joint statement welcoming the deal as “a moment of opportunity to restore regional stability and stabilize the global economy”.
Ukraine is also on the table
In addition to Iran, the conflict in Ukraine is expected to play a central role in the Summit, as according to what has been announced on the sidelines, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been invited to participate. In fact, Zelensky himself appears to have proposed a four-way meeting at the G7 Summit between himself, Donald Trump, Emmanuel Macron and Vladimir Putin.
As he said in his statements: “We sent the message that we are ready to meet with Putin during the G7, because Trump is there and Macron is there, so the Europeans plus America. I think it’s a good, a very good opportunity for us all to meet together. Europe and the US agreed and Russia has shown again that it is not ready to talk.” It is noted that it is reported that Trump communicated with Putin over the weekend, as well as with Volodymyr Zelensky on the occasion of the US president’s 80th birthday.
Economy and trade on the menu of threats
Another issue sure to preoccupy the Summit is the economy and trade, with Trump also throwing a missile by issuing yet another threat to France and the EU, arguing that if Paris does not repeal the digital tax it imposes on American tech companies, then the US “has no choice” but to impose 100% tariffs on French wines.
