‘We don’t understand’, say those responsible for jump without ropes that killed young man

Os responsible for the operation of the rope jump which ended with the aged 21, in Limeira, in the interior of São Paulo, said not knowing how to explain why the young woman was thrown from the bridge without safety ropes.

One of those investigated stated in a statement to the Civil Police, published by the g1 portal, that inspections were normally carried out before the jumps.

“In hers, we still don’t understand,” he declared. When reporting what happened after the fall, he said he went down to the place where the young woman was being helped.

The victim died on Saturday (13), after jumping from the Skeleton Bridge. According to the Civil Police, Maria Eduarda should have been tied to two safety ropes, but none of them were installed at the time of the activity. The report tries to contact the lawyers of those responsible.

According to delegate Andrea Levy, responsible for the investigation, the three employees responsible for the operation and who remain in prison reported in a statement that do not remember who should install or supervise safety equipment.

In testimony, another investigator stated that the installation and checking of the ropes were carried out alternately between the members of the operation and that there was no rigid definition as to who would perform each step in each jump.

“Sometimes we put it in, someone else checks it; someone else checks it, someone else puts it in. Sometimes we do it, someone else comes and sees if it’s right. It was more or less that,” he said. Asked who should have installed or supervised the ropes at Maria Eduarda’s jump, the employee replied that he didn’t remember. “I don’t remember,” he said.

He classified the case as a fatality and said that those involved cannot understand how the accident occurred.

“It was truly a fatality. No one leaves home to do something like that.” [matar uma pessoa]. Everyone there is obsessed with sports. It’s a group of guys who like it, and they got together to do this,” he declared.

“We say we don’t understand because it’s visible [a corda]. It’s difficult to understand how he didn’t see it”, he declared. The person under investigation also stated that the laying of the ropes was normally done by him and another member of the team. “It’s me and him who does it”, he said.

Homicide with possible intent

The case is investigated as homicide with possible intentwhen assumes the risk of causing death even without the direct intention to kill. In addition to the dynamics of the accident, the police are also investigating the disappearance of a camera that was with the young woman at the time of the fall.

Witnesses interviewed by the report also stated that those responsible for the activity organized the jumps through a WhatsApp group. According to reports, the group brought together participants in the activities and shared safety guidelines, as well as tips on videos with the potential to go viral on social media.

According to pedagogical coordinator Rafael Goulart, who was at the scene on the day of the accident, the participants discovered only after the tragedy that the group responsible for the jumps did not have formal registration. “This company, in fact, does not exist. They had no registration, they did not have a CNPJ”, he stated.
