Default affects 75.06 million Brazilians in May

Number represents 44.8% of the country’s adult population; according to CNDL and SPC Brasil, 51.34% of defaulters are women

The (National Confederation of Retail Managers) and registered 75.06 million consumers with a negative name in Brazil in May 2026. The number represents 44.8% of the country’s adult population.

The annual variation observed in May this year was below that observed in the previous month. In the monthly comparison, there was an increase of 0.44% compared to . Data on Wednesday (June 17, 2026).

In the month of May, each defaulter owed, on average, R$5,145.04. Each debtor has debts with around 2.34 creditor companies. The annual increase was concentrated on the inclusion of people with a default period of 4 to 5 years, which increased by 38.35%.

The data shows that almost 3 in 10 Brazilians (29.19%) had debts worth up to R$500, a percentage that reaches 41.52% when talking about debts of up to R$1,000.

The total volume of outstanding debts grew 15.64% in May 2026 compared to the same month in 2025. The data observed in May this year was below the annual variation observed in the previous month. Between April and May, the number of debts increased by 0.41%.

“The worsening macroeconomic scenario, rising dollar and high interest rates, put direct pressure on inflation and the cost of living”stated the president of the CNDL, José César da Costa.

“Even with the Desenrola program, which plays a fundamental role in cleaning and rescuing CPFs, the general situation that suffocates the family budget has not changed” declared. “Many consumers who turned to Desenrola managed to renegotiate a portion of their debts, but remained with other financial issues or took on new commitments that were delayed again”these.

Profile and regional distribution

The largest contingent of debtors is concentrated in the age group of 30 to 39 years old, with 18.23 million people. The distribution by gender shows a female predominance: 51.34% are women and 48.66% are men.

O The South had the most significant increase in the number of defaulters in the annual comparison, with growth of 9.86%, followed by the North (9.52%), Southeast (7.94%), Central-West (7.08%) and Northeast (6.04%).

In relation to the number of debts, the biggest increase came from the North region (17.49%), followed by the South (16.88%), Southeast (15.09%), Central-West (14.08%) and Northeast (12.28%).

According to the survey, the highest percentage of defaulters is in the North region, where 48.48% of the adult population is included in debtors’ registers. On the other hand, in the South region, the proportion of negative people is equivalent to 40.78% of the adult population.
