More than 250 workers receive training for Mercadona stores in the Algarve

Spanish chain Mercadona will open a store in Portimão and is hiring

Mercadona will invest one million euros in training the more than 250 workers who will join the chain’s new stores in the Algarve, with openings scheduled for October, in Portimão, and November, in Faro.

According to the company, this investment is part of the preparation for expansion in the region and aims to ensure that the new teams acquire technical and operational skills before the supermarkets open.

Mercadona highlights that the training will ensure “excellent service to customers from the opening of the new stores”.

Workers began training little by little at the beginning of the year and have an effective contract from the first day of work. The training is paid and, according to the company, you will be “100% under the company’s responsibility” with regard to food, transportation and accommodation, including travel home every 15 days.

For Mercadona, this investment is essential in preparing the workers involved in the project for the future, while also contributing to the company’s sustainable growth.

The supermarket chain says that training integrates a set of internally promoted values, alongside internal promotion, teamwork and salary progression, with the aim of ensuring stability, job quality and continuous development.

Training adapted to each job position

The training plan defined by Mercadona is specific to each role and its main objective is to ensure progressive adaptation to the responsibilities of each position and the company’s culture.

Through the Welcome Plan, new employees begin their journey with knowledge about Mercadona’s corporate culture and the principles of its Total Quality Model, deepening these contents in the first months of integration.

At the same time, they receive technical training adapted to the demands of each role, in a model that, according to the company, prioritizes “learning, gradual integration and professional development”.

Mercadona also highlights that the focus on training does not end with initial integration. Throughout their professional career, the company promotes continuous training and specific programs for workers who take on new responsibilities or progress to other roles.

The company has part-time vacancies available for store operators

For the new stores in Portimão and Faro, the company has part-time vacancies available for store operators, with 20-hour working hours per week, five days a week, and fixed shifts, as well as 15-hour working hours per week on Saturdays and Sundays.

In 20-hour positions, remuneration starts at R$7,646 gross per year and progresses up to R$10,457 gross per year, plus food allowance, Sundays and holidays. For 15-hour weekly positions, remuneration starts at 5,734 euros gross per year and can reach 7,843 euros gross per year, also with allowances.

The company also has vacancies open for maintenance assistants, with a 40-hour work week and a gross annual salary of R$15,293, with progression up to R$20,915.

In addition to the effective contract and salary progression, Mercadona informs that it offers food vouchers, payment for holidays and Sundays, working hours known one month in advance and an annual performance bonus.

From the first full calendar year onwards, this award is equivalent to one extra salary and, from four years of service onwards, it corresponds to two extra salaries.

At the end of 2025, the company also announced the allocation of up to 29 days of vacation per year, the equivalent of another week of vacation.
