NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said this Thursday (18) that he welcomes the memorandum signed between the United States and Iran.
“I welcome the agreement. I think President Trump reached a good deal,” Rutte told reporters in Brussels ahead of a meeting of the military alliance’s defense ministers.
According to him, the memorandum will help reduce and restore freedom of navigation in the region.
The peace plan, made up of 14 points and signed by the United States and Iran, ends the clashes between the two countries and paves the way for . The document also includes Tehran’s commitment not to acquire or develop nuclear weapons, although broader questions related to Iran’s nuclear program remain unanswered.
Rutte added that ensuring navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is not the direct responsibility of NATO. Still, he stated that the alliance will be able to collaborate if requested.
“If NATO can play a role, then, of course, we are always willing to help,” he declared.
