A case of the highly contagious bird flu variant H5 has been detected for the first time in Australia. The disease was found in a migratory bird in the west of the country and confirmed by the scientific authority, Agriculture Minister Julie Collins told journalists on Saturday. This is the first case of the viral disease, which is usually fatal for birds, on the Australian mainland.
