Sleeping Firesthe story about two blind masseuses in Japan’s Edo era, is brand new and, directed by its author Kurō Tanino, only premiered in Hong Kong in March of this year. Tanino beams back almost 200 years to an abandoned farmer’s hut north of Edo (now Tokyo), where a blind woman named Iku lives with her husband. Her therapeutic massages are widely known. As a blind woman, her ability to perceive with her hands is particularly pronounced.
