Tehran’s decision follows renewed Israeli air strikes on Lebanon, which this Saturday killed at least 23 people, including four from the same family. Washington must “take the necessary measures as quickly as possible” to ensure compliance with the agreement, says Iranian diplomats
The spokesman for Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said this Saturday that the US “has an obligation to force Israel to cease attacks on Lebanon” like those carried out this morning in the south of the country.
The statements, cited by the Iranian state agency FARS, came after Iran’s main joint military command, the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, closed the Strait of Hormuz to vessel traffic, citing “violations” of the ceasefire agreement signed on Friday between Israel and Hezbollah, as part of the memorandum of understanding signed by Washington and Tehran in the middle of this week.
Tehran says the closure of Hormuz is the “first step” in response to what it describes as Israel’s violations of its commitments, warning that further measures will be taken if the “aggression” continues.
The Iranian diplomatic spokesman says that the Americans must “take the necessary measures as quickly as possible” to ensure that the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah is respected, and stresses that the US-Iran agreement will be “in trouble” if these measures are not taken.
The same source says that, despite everything, the Iranian delegation’s trip to Switzerland continues. “In Switzerland, we will demand compliance with US commitments and determine how they intend to fulfill them,” said the spokesman for Abbas Araghachi, Iran’s head of diplomacy.
Previous Israeli attacks on Lebanon had already led to Iran’s postponement of the new round of negotiations that will take place in Switzerland.
