Treatment combines venetoclax with azacitidine for newly diagnosed patients who cannot undergo intensive chemotherapy
The Ministry of Health will introduce the combined treatment of venetoclax with azacitidine for adult patients with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia.
The combination of drugs is indicated for patients who, due to clinical conditions, are not eligible for standard treatment with intensive chemotherapy, being another therapy alternative for this group.
According to the ordinance, published on Monday (June 15, 2026), the new option will be offered in the public health network within 180 days, as established by federal standards that regulate the incorporation of technologies in the SUS.
The measure follows the recommendation of Conitec (National Commission for the Incorporation of Technologies into the Unified Health System) and is aligned with the Clinical Protocol.
The technical report that supported the decision will be available for public consultation.
Leukemia
According to the Ministry of Health, leukemia is a type of blood cancer originating in the bone marrow, the tissue responsible for producing red and white blood cells and platelets. When there is a genetic mutation, these components can transform into cancerous cells.
In the acute form, the disease becomes even more fatal if not treated early. Diagnosis in the early stages and specialized referral are essential for good treatment results.
This is the most common form of acute leukemia in adults and mainly affects elderly patients.
