The head of the United Nations nuclear surveillance agency met with the Swiss Foreign Minister at the mountain resort of Bürgenstock, as he published in X this Sunday (21).
Rafael Grossi, director general of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), stated that he met with the Swiss Chancellor, Ignazio Cassis, “to assess recent developments in relation to Iran, the way forward and the important role of the IAEA”.
“At this critical moment, it is important to give diplomacy every opportunity to succeed,” he wrote.
Delegations from the United States and Iran are also expected to meet in Bürgenstock this Sunday (21) to discuss the agreement to end the war between the two countries.
US Vice President JD Vance, who landed in Switzerland this morning, said his top priorities in negotiations with Iran are establishing the framework for talks going forward, “making progress” on nuclear issues and reaching a ceasefire in Lebanon.
The vice president stated that he could only stay in Switzerland for “a day or two”, but expressed the hope of advancing negotiations on the treatment of Iranian nuclear material.
In the initial framework agreement with the US, Tehran confirmed that it “shall not acquire or develop nuclear weapons”.
But the parties agreed to wait for the nominee to negotiate final terms before deciding what to do with Iran’s stockpile of enriched nuclear material.
