Olympic medalist Rebeca Andrade won the vault final this Sunday morning, in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), and took gold in the Pan-American Artistic Gymnastics Championships on her return to the arenas after almost two years.
She was the last to perform among the eight finalist gymnasts and received a score of 14.266. The silver medal went to Canadian Lia Monica Fontaie and the bronze to American Claire Pease.
During the last week, Brazil won the silver medal in the women’s team competition and secured a place in the world championship, which will be held in October in the Netherlands.
Rebeca Andrade wrote on her Instagram that “returning to competitions is never just about executing series or achieving results”. “It’s about finding a part of who I am.”
Owner of six Olympic medals, the 28-year-old gymnast announced last year that she will no longer compete in floor events to save her knees.
She underwent three surgeries on her right knee after tearing her anterior cruciate ligament in 2015, when she was still a teenager. In 2017, he underwent a new operation resulting from the same injury. In 2019, on the eve of the Pan de Lima, in Peru, he again had problems there and needed another surgery.
At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Rebeca won four medals, including gold in the floor final.
