Bodybuilders are often seen as big people because of the large muscle mass they carry on their bodies. However, several encounters between athletes in this sport and other personalities, such as basketball idols or strongman competitors, can put this logic into perspective.
A clear example of this type of situation occurred at the awards ceremony for category 212 at Olympia 2022, when Brian Shaw –who is over 2 m tall and weighs over 170 kg– took the stage and stood next to athletes weighing less than 100 kg.
Anyone who thinks that only the shortest bodybuilders in the IFBB Pro League are small next to the American strength athlete is mistaken. Winner of four editions of the Olympia (2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010) in the Open category, Jay Cutler was also left behind alongside him.
Another personality who has made this impression several times is Shaquille O’Neal. The former basketball player has already made both Nick Walker, one of the biggest “mass monsters” (a term used in bodybuilding to refer to athletes who carry extreme amounts of muscle around their bone structure) of his generation, and Derek Lunsford, twice elected Mister Olympia, look small.
Not even Ramon Rocha Queiroz, known as Dino, escaped. Alongside Willian Brito Piovezan, Bitelo, the Olympia 2025 champion in the Classic Physique category did not impress as he usually does.
Finally, there is the time that Flavio Baccianini, 1.47 m tall, performed alongside Lou Ferrigno, 1.96 m tall. Taking place in the 1992 edition of the Olympia, the confrontation between the two bodybuilders who were almost 50 centimeters apart caught the attention of many spectators.
