It is the eternal struggle of the gardener and the tiny omnivore. And even if someone wants to get rid of it, experts recommend changing the point of view. “After all, it’s a beautiful animal and it would be a real shame to kill it,” laughs Vlastimil Šindelář in the consulting room of the iReceptář podcast.

Anyone who has a garden can definitely imagine that vanity. One pile next to another, dug up flower beds and where are you even supposed to put a chair so that one or more legs don’t sink into the fresh soil? A mole can be quite a pain. But it bothers people more, because we want to have everything the way we planned it. For the garden itself, his presence is a blessing. “After all, biters do far more damage,” says gardener Vlastimil Šindelář.
Every odd one
You will find a whole range of proven methods to get rid of a mole without a garden, of course without using destructive chemicals. Maybe stick piles of dog hair in it. Or use a scarecrow made of empty PET bottles.
Someone also says that a mole digs every odd hour. But does the mole know what time it is? And does it respect the change of winter time to summer time? “You can easily lie in wait with a shovel and see. When the mound starts to rise, you might even be able to scoop it up and then maybe take it somewhere to the forest,” laughs the gardener. “But if you’re going to pick up a shovel, it’s a much better idea to scoop up the whole mole. And without the mole.”
The best substrate
As unsightly as the piles in the lawn look, there is a real treasure hidden in them. “Krtina is a beautifully aerated soil, there are not even stones in it,” describes the gardener. And unlike the substrate, which often contains a lot of peat and therefore dries out easily and is then more difficult to water, this does not happen with beautiful mole soil.
Work with it similarly, although of course it is not as nutritious. Simply scoop up the mole on a shovel and use it in flower beds or boxes. For greater volume, you can mix it with gardening substrate or use it alone. It will be light and nutritious in both cases.
