New MEI ceiling will be up to R$ 140 thousand, says rapporteur

The new revenue ceiling for the Individual Microentrepreneur (MEI) may be between R$130,000 and R$140,000 per year and allows the hiring of up to two employees. The information was given by federal deputy Jorge Goetten (Republicanos-SC), rapporteur of the special committee that discusses the topic in the Chamber of Deputies.

In an interview with Young Pan This Sunday (28), the parliamentarian stated that negotiations have progressed in recent months and that there is already a consensus on the need to update the current limits.

“The importance and need for MEIs to continue thriving and growing is unanimous. The economic team is already pacified, the government understands the importance and accepts updating the MEI ceiling, giving the opportunity to hire two employees”, he stated.

Currently, MEI’s annual revenue limit is R$81,000. According to Goetten, the value gap has prevented the growth of thousands of small entrepreneurs.

The deputy stated that the discussion now also involves updating the Simples Nacional bands for micro and small companies.

“We also understand and need to update the ceiling for micro and small companies, which has been out of date since 2016,” he said.

According to the parliamentarian, the updating of both modalities must occur together to avoid distortions in the tax system.

The concern is that an increase only in the MEI ceiling will encourage companies covered by Simples Nacional to migrate to a category with lower taxation.

“There is no environment in the Chamber of Deputies to update just the MEIs. We have to update both together”, he stated.

Goetten also rejected the assessment that the measure would represent a loss of revenue for the federal government.

“There’s nothing about waiver. It’s simply an update”, he declared.

According to the deputy, the topic has received support from parliamentarians, members of the economic team and the president of the Chamber, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB).

The rapporteur’s expectation is that the special committee will complete voting on the proposal before the parliamentary recess. After that, the text may be sent to the Chamber plenary for analysis.

“We are progressing well. I believe that in the coming weeks we will approve this in the committee and then take the report to the House plenary”, he stated.

According to Goetten, updating the limits can benefit a sector that represents more than 90% of the country’s formal companies and expand the conditions for small business growth.
