The much-criticized Hong Myung-bo resigned this Sunday (28) from his position as coach of the South Korean national team, following their elimination in the first phase of the 2026 World Cup, according to the press in the Asian country.
The former captain of the South Korean national team, 57, failed once again in his second spell in charge of the team, with them eliminated in group A from the World Cup after scoring three points.
South Korea beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in their debut, but were then defeated by Mexico and South Africa 1-0 and failed to advance to the round of 32 as one of the eight best third-placed teams.
Hong Myung-bo took responsibility for the failure and resigned on Sunday, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.
He had previously led South Korea at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where the team was also eliminated in the first round after drawing with Russia (1-1) and losing to Algeria (4-2) and Belgium (1-0).
Hong Myung-bo is recognized as one of the best South Korean players in history.
He was the first Asian player to play in four World Cups: Italy 1990, United States 1994, France 1998 and South Korea and Japan 2002.
In the 2002 World Cup, the “Taeguk Warriors” reached the semi-finals and Hong Myung-bo received the Bronze Ball as the third best player in the tournament.
