  • A three-year-old boy trapped in a car died in the Paris region.
  • The child got into the unlocked family car, which was then automatically locked.
  • The parents found their son unconscious after being in the vehicle for at least 45 minutes.

The tragic incident took place on Wednesday, June 24, in the Paris suburb of Saint-Gratien. According to the investigation so far, the father was working in the garden shed and had previously told his son to go and rest. At the time, the mother was sleeping at home with their second, only 18-month-old child.

When the parents realized after a long time that their son was nowhere to be seen, they started looking for him and found him unconscious in the car seat. Even though they immediately gave him first aid and the called firefighters continued with resuscitation, the child’s vital functions could not be restored. The boy’s mother suffered a severe psychological shock after this traumatic experience and had to be hospitalized.

Police confirmed that when the door slammed behind the child, the child lock automatically activated, preventing the boy from getting out. Rescue services later added that the minor boy was trapped in the infernal heat without supervision for at least three quarters of an hour. “He apparently then locked himself in and got stuck in the vehicle until his parents found him unconscious“, the prosecutor said.

This devastating case adds to the tally of three child victims within a single week. Just a few days before, the bodies of two siblings, aged two and four, were discovered in the French city of Carpentras. The children were found without signs of life in a car parked in the parking lot near their house, where they also entered without the knowledge of their parents.

France is facing unprecedented weather these days. It was Wednesday, June 24, that went down in history as the warmest day ever since the beginning of meteorological measurements in 1947, while the national average temperature reached exactly 30 °C. In Paris itself, the mercury on the thermometer climbed to a scorching 40.3 °C. The limit of forty degrees was exceeded in the metropolis only for the fourth time in the last 150 years.

Meteorologists warn that the current wave of suffocation that is plaguing the country will bear comparison with the tragic summer of 2003, when almost 15 thousand people died in France. According to estimates, around 63 million inhabitants are currently suffering from sweltering heat above 30 degrees. Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire confirmed that the number of deaths in the capital is increasing, but the authorities have not yet specified the exact numbers.
