The number of victims of last week’s double earthquake in Venezuela has risen to at least 1,719, the speaker of the country’s parliament, Jorge Rodríguez, announced on Monday. TASR informs about it based on reports from AFP and CNN.

At the same time, Rodríguez said that 5,034 people were injured as a result of two devastating earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. According to him, tens of thousands of people are still missing.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) says there is a 44 percent chance the final death toll will exceed 10,000. The earthquake affected at least 22,619 people. 189 buildings completely collapsed. Since Wednesday’s earthquake, 609 aftershocks have been recorded in Venezuela, Rodríguez said. One of them with a magnitude of 4.6 hit Caracas and the state of La Guaira on Monday, but did not cause any major damage.
