In May, the Algarve maintained the positive trajectory of tourist activity, with growth in the main indicators of demand and revenue, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute.
In the month under review, the region received 586.1 thousand guests, 6.5% more compared to May 2025, and registered 2.1 million overnight stays, which represents an annual increase of 4.7%.
Total revenue reached 179 million euros, reflecting growth of 10.5%, in a performance that confirms the positive evolution of the destination in volume and value.
According to Algarve Tourism, the destination registered “586.1 thousand guests, 2.1 million overnight stays and 179 million euros in total revenue”, with the national market once again standing out, “with double-digit growth”.
National market grows at double digits
The region’s performance was supported by both the national and foreign markets. The number of resident guests increased by 12.4%, while non-resident guests grew by 5.1%.
In overnight stays, residents recorded a 10% increase, while non-residents grew 3.8%.
The average stay in the Algarve was 3.60 nights, 48.8% above the national average, which was 2.42 nights. This indicator confirms the region as one of the national destinations with longer stays.
The room occupancy rate was 64.3%, in line with the national average of 64.1%.
Albufeira once again established itself as the main tourist destination in the Algarve and as the second municipality in the country in terms of number of overnight stays, with 815.8 thousand overnight stays in May, 9.1% more than in the same month of the previous year.
Nationally, the Algarve placed seven municipalities in the top-15 of municipalities with the highest number of overnight stays.
Faro Airport follows positive developments
Faro Airport also followed the positive evolution of the destination, registering a 5.6% growth in the number of passengers in May.
According to Turismo do Algarve, this performance was driven by the British market, which grew 8.1% and reached a share of 46.4% in the airport’s monthly movement.
For André Gomes, president of , “the May results confirm the consistency of the Algarve destination and its ability to grow in volume and value. The increase in revenue, above the evolution of guests and overnight stays, demonstrates that the region continues to reinforce its competitiveness and the appreciation of its tourist offer”.
“The significant growth of the national market, along with the positive evolution of external markets and the movement at Faro Airport, are important signs of confidence in the destination. These results reinforce the role of the Algarve as the main tourist region in the country and as a competitive, qualified and increasingly attractive destination throughout the year”, adds André Gomes.
