“disappointed” with Spain. The US ambassador to NATO, Matt Whitaker, has said that US President Donald Trump is “disappointed in Spain” due to Washington’s veto of stopping the war in Iran and after refusing to increase defense spending to 5% of its GDP.
“There is no doubt that the president is disappointed with Spain. Both because of the issues of (restriction of) access to bases and the overflight that we saw during ‘Epic Fury’, and also, you know, because of his lack of will to demonstrate a credible trajectory towards 5%,” said the American.
In this sense, the ambassador has said that they all signed them “unanimously” the commitment to increase defense spending, which is why the United States hopes that all member states of the alliance will sign it, which includes Spain.
“They don’t want to pay and they want everything to be free”
The statements by the US ambassador to NATO come just a week after the US president charged again against Spain for their lack of collaboration in the face of the Iran war.
“We were disappointed with Italy, the United Kingdom, with Germany and France, with Spain (…) Spain is a real disaster. Spain is terrible (…) They don’t want to pay anything. They think they are going to get their way. Spain is not a good team at all,” lamented the Republican leader, who added that despite this he does not need their help. “But it would have been nice if they had said: ‘We want to help,'” he added.
Regarding Spain, the American president assured that he wants to benefit from the defense without offering anything in return. “They don’t want to pay anything; They believe that everything will be free. Spain is not a good group at all“, he stated.
