Learn the simple and economic German trick to end moisture on the walls

Humidade

In a country like Portugal, where moisture is a constant presence in many dwellings – especially during autumn and winter – mold spots on the walls remain a recurring problem. This German popular trick promises to end moisture spots on the walls without toxic products or unnecessary expenses. Learn how to do it.

This phenomenon, more than a simple aesthetic issue, can pose serious risks to public health, in particular for chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma, or for children and elderly people with greater sensitivity to air suspension particles.

Excessive moisture inside favors the appearance of fungi, whose presence is associated with a higher risk of allergies, persistent cough and even infections.

According to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), prolonged exposure to moist and molding environments is associated with aggravation of respiratory symptoms and a higher incidence of infections in vulnerable groups.

In Portugal, the National Institute of Health Doctor Ricardo Jorge () has also alerted to the dangers of poor inner air quality, often resulting from the presence of fungi on the walls.

The solution, however, may be away from the supermarket shelves and closer to the kitchen: a combination of white vinegar and sodium baking soda, recurrently used in homes in Germany.

The German recipe against mold

The mixture – popularized in housing and sustainability forums – consists of combining two equal parts of white vinegar and baking soda.

Applied in the form of paste on the affected areas, this solution allows you to eliminate stains and fungi effectively, without having to resort to products with aggressive chemicals.

The method is simple:

  • In a bowl, mix vinegar and baking soda until a thick paste is obtained;
  • Apply on the mold with a sponge or brush;
  • Let it act for 20 to 30 minutes;
  • Rub gently and clean with a damp cloth;
  • Ventile the division well after treatment.

Vinegar, with its antifungal and disinfectant properties, acts on the destruction of mold spores.

Already baking soda helps remove odors and facilitates the physical removal of the more bowels.

Prevent is still more effective than remedy

Despite the effectiveness of this German trick, experts stress that moisture control must first and foremost.

Daily aeration of divisions – especially bathrooms and kitchens – is critical, such as maintaining an appropriate internal temperature and correction of infiltrations or chronic condensations.

In particularly exposed dwellings, the use of dehumidifiers, the placement of ventilation grills, or the replacement of windows by thermal break solutions can make the difference between a healthy space and an environment conducive to fungal proliferation.

Moreover, it should be noted that the mold is just one of the visible signs of a deeper structural problem: the existence of persistent moisture.

When molding arises regularly, it is recommended to seek specialized technical support to identify the origin of infiltration – either by condensation, capillarity or poor waterproofing.
