Elon Musk has taken the step. After weeks of clashes with Donald Trump, sales falls in Tesla and the fiscal coup to his electric cars, the businessman has announced in his social network X the creation of a new political party: the America Party. “Two out of three you have asked for a new political party, and you will have it,” he wrote this Saturday. The movement was born as an outcome of its break with the Republican President, after the approval of the new budget and fiscal law that Musk qualifies as “a waste and corruption”, and in response to a massive survey among his followers, with more than 1.2 million votes and 65 % support.
Unlike other magnates, Musk does not want to create a party to present himself to President – he can not be born in South Africa – but to alter the balance of power in Congress. Its plan is to focus on “only 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 districts of the House of Representatives”, enough to have the key voting key. “Given the legislative margins, fine as a blade, that would be enough to ensure that the laws respond to the true will of the people,” he wrote.
The ideology is not yet formalized, but Musk has given its support to a manifesto with strong technological, liberal and pronatalist imprint. The ‘Tesla Owners Silicon Valley’ account published a list of principles that he retweeted with a “yes!” Among them: “reduce debt”, “less regulation”, especially in the energy sector, “modernize the army with artificial intelligence”, “freedom of expression”, “pronatalism” and “centrist policies in the remaining.”
The creation of the party is not an outburst, but the outcome of a broken relationship. Musk resigned at the end of May in his charge in the White House as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge), an office created by Trump to cut public spending. The rupture was consumed when the president signed on July 4 the “great and beautiful budgeted law”, despite the public criticisms of the tycoon.
Musk, who donated about 300 million to the Trump campaign in 2024, considers that law a betrayal of austerity commitments and a threat to the economy. And he launched a direct warning: “Republican legislators who voted this law will lose their primaries next year, even the last thing to do on this land.”
All this has coincided with a delicate period for your businesses. Tesla has registered a 13 % drop in sales of the second quarter and 71 % in its net benefits during the first three months of the year. Analysts point to the elimination of fiscal credit of 7,500 dollars for electric vehicles, driven by Republicans, as one of the causes. According to JPMorgan, that could cost the company about 1.2 billion dollars annually.
Trump: “It has become a disaster”
The America Party does not appear yet as a registered party before the Federal Electoral Commission, although there are movements in that regard. In the database records appear with the name of Musk and his usual treasurer, Vaibhav Taneja. In the United States it is not mandatory to formalize a party until certain expenditure or collection thresholds linked to elections are exceeded.
The initiative has already received business support. Mark Cuban, Anthony Scaramucci or the investor Tyler Palmer have been favorable. However, there are also critical voices. Azoria Partners has decided to postpone the launch of a fund linked to Tesla and has asked its Board to evaluate whether Musk’s political ambitions are compatible with its position as CEO. “You must clarify your intentions as soon as possible,” said its executive director, James Fishback.
Twenty -four hours later, Trump broke his silence hard. On Sunday, before going up to the Air Force One in New Jersey, he described the new Musk game as “ridiculous.” “I think it is nonsense to set up a third game. We have a tremendous success with the Republican party. Democrats have lost their way, but this has always been a two -game system. A third party only adds confusion,” he told journalists.
Then, in his social Truth network, he launched a more direct personal attack: “I’m sad to see how Elon Musk has completely derailed. He has become a train derailment in the last five weeks.” The president accused Musk of acting for personal interests and having set up the America Party as a retaliation for the withdrawal of subsidies to Tesla. “If I didn’t receive government money, I would have to return to South Africa,” he wrote.
Trump also charged against Doge, the government efficiency department that he created and that Musk briefly led. The president ironized about his usefulness: “What was the meaning of @Doge if he was simply going to increase the debt in five billion dollars?” Musk published shortly before in X, to which Trump replied that Doge was not intended for entrepreneurs who “just want to protect their interests.”
Another friction point has been the designation of Jared Isaacman as NASA director. Trump confirmed that he withdrew his nomination after knowing his links with Musk and his past support for Democratic politicians. “I also thought it was inappropriate that an intimate friend of Elon, who works in the space business, directed NASA, when this agency is such an important part of Elon’s business life. My main responsibility is to protect the US people,” wrote the president in Truth Social.
